Great Lakes beaches can change in appearance daily. Sometimes Lake Michigan’s Left Coast is covered with multicolored rocks, most of them deposited by glaciers. Fossils abound. “My favorite rocks are Banded Iron Formation (BIF),” says artist and photographer Elizabeth G. Fagan. “They arrived here from iron formations near Lake Superior. Some are among the oldest rocks on Earth, dating back 2.7 billion years. Yes, billion.
