“I bought this scary fellow from an older Asian couple at a Chicago street fair,” says artist and writer Elizabeth G Fagan. “The sellers exchanged sinister looks when I handed over the $10 payment. It’s about 4 inches tall and made of bone or antler (not ivory). But its origin remains a mystery. At Primitive—a must-see shop in Chicago that specializes in handmade art from around the world—curators were mystified but said,’maybe Tibetan or Himalayan?’ Sorry, the statuette itself is not for sale.”
