Elizabeth G Fagan considers this lemon-yellow-and-black beauty one of her friendliest and most attractive neighbors.

This garter snake popped by for a breakfast of toad, presumably, as Fagan’s yard is full of ’em. At 2 to 3 feet long, the cheerful snake is likely female; males are far smaller. She bears a distinctive white stripe down her back. She’s welcome anytime—as long as she’s not a Brewer’s fan.

Fagan is a digital artist who always begins her work by taking photographs. Sometimes the photos are so delicate, so complete just the way they are, that she stops right there, as she has with this garter snake. See more of Fagan’s Fellow Creatures.
